Brewton Data Center

I’m at one of Uniti’s most unique facilities – tucked away between Pensacola and Montgomery, in Brewton, Alabama.  It’s here that a previous telecom company broke ground and originally built this 68,000 square-foot building, to be used as a critical facility for their Long Lines department.  Fast forward 60 years and it has been rejuvenated as an off-the-beaten path datacenter, providing connectivity, hosting and disaster recovery operations for our customers.

Now come take a stroll with me down memory lane.

In the late 1950’s, a major telecom provider needed to place a junction location for their Long Lines network – which at that time, was a network comprised of both coax and wireless connectivity that carried long distance telephone calls between switching centers as well as national broadcast TV.  Wireless hops were limited to approximately 30 miles and this hill-top plateau was selected to be a 4-way junction. This building was erected during the Cold War with 1 foot thick concrete copper-lined walls for protection – think of it as a faraday cage and how it protects against EMPs. In the 60s, the site became critical for NASA communications between Houston and the Cape – along with hosting an air-to-ground communications system for Air Force One.

When you look at the map of the Southeast United States, Brewton is just another dot on the map. However, when you overlay communication paths, our location serves a special and critical need.  With this facility we are able to house large scale data warehousing and extremely high-capacity communications, that connect major horizontal paths.

When we took ownership of this hardened building in the mid-2010s, we knew that we had something special.  After having our diverse high-count fiber placed in, rehabilitation began – not only giving it a fresh coat of paint, but repairing and optimizing the Air Conditioning systems, reconditioning the DC power plant and modernizing the power backup systems with a high-capacity diesel generator with priority fuel delivery.

When you look at what we can offer from Brewton, there are two approaches that can be considered.  The first approach is our updated and finished main floor with ample space for custom cages or singular cabinets. Both AC and DC power can be delivered with targeted cooling.  This is the perfect option for mid sized businesses looking for colocation or disaster back up services.

The second approach is our “blank canvas” offering on the second and third floor, and quite frankly – the sky is the limit. From more private suites and cages to partial or entire floor options – we work with you on your custom solution to ensure physical access, cooling and power meets your criteria. This option is ideal for a major carrier or CBM looking to address a large scale need – whether that’s colocation, back up services, or disaster recovery. This facility was meant for thinking big.

Our Brewton Data Center really is a special facility and its possibilities are endless. It’s an exciting opportunity for customers in need of a strategically located, purpose built, cutting edge, colocation space – in a building that was literally built to withstand a nuclear blast. That’s how seriously we take protecting your data and services. We would love to tell you more about our Brewton Data Center, please reach out today for more information.
